2018 GROUP FACILITATION COURSE (4-days)
The Group Facilitation Course is a 4-day experiential program that teaches the knowledge, skills and experiences necessary to run groups with competence
and confidence. Core training is considered a prerequisite for advanced practice in group work. The course examines the scope of practice, types of
group work, group development, group processes and dynamics, group leadership, conflict management and standards of training and practice for group
The course offers a mix of core groupwork concepts and skills, experiential learning and integration of learning with practical groupwork experiences. Each day builds on material learnt from the day before. It is based on an international set of standards for group work, which were developed by the Association for Specialists in Group Work Professional Training Standards for the Training of Group Workers (USA) and is tailored to an Australian context. The course has a maximum of 15 participants and is led by highly skilled accredited trainers.
STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE: As well as introducing groupwork concepts, each day will also make time for experiential learning, and may include individual, small group and whole group discussions and activities.
- Demonstrate group work planning, program development and associated administrative functions
- Identify the key elements of group dynamics and group processes
- Demonstrate the application of adult learning principles and appropriate techniques and intervention strategies for facilitating a group process
- Compare group leadership styles and the theoretical perspectives that inform them
- Demonstrate ethical group work behaviour and identify professional development needs and strategies.

CLASS SIZE: Minimum 6, maximum 15.
COST: $840.00 IGL Members and $1,040.00 non-members for the 4 days, this fee includes morning tea and lunch each day.

SUITABLE FOR: Workers in the helping professions wanting to gain knowledge, skills and confidence in group work facilitation. It is also suitable for professionals whose primary role is not group facilitation but are required to facilitate groups as part of their work.
A Certificate of Attendance will be provided to participants for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) purposes.
FACILITATORS: Irene Gaffney and Dr Neil Hall
Irene Gaffney - Irene is a social worker and group work facilitator with over 25 years’ experience. She has facilitated groups in the
areas of couple separation, parenting, varied relationship issues and domestic violence. Currently she facilitates couples courses, supervises counsellors
and group work facilitators as well as university tutoring.
Dr Neil Hall - Neil is a lecturer in Social Work and Welfare at Western Sydney University and has 30 years of experience in group work practice, training and teaching in areas of adolescent health, drug and alcohol, juvenile justice, corrections, sport, music, aboriginal reconciliation and youth leadership. He specifically teaches Group Work subjects to 2nd year students at Bachelor and Masters level, and is in the process of writing a new Group work text book for Routledge, due out in 2018. His research and broader work is in the area of the social determinants of the health and wellbeing of men and boys, with particular focus on alternative means of social engagement (such as sport and creative and performing arts).
